There aren’t many great turn-based RPGs for the PS5 yet because it’s still pretty new. These great PS4 games can help fill in the blanks, though.
Many people are still interested in the PlayStation 5, but millions of players around the world are still using the PlayStation 4. They either haven’t changed yet or don’t plan to. For this reason, some people only play the PS4 when they want to play any of the great PlayStation games.
People who like turn-based RPGs don’t need to rush to the next generation just yet. Which is why the PlayStation 4 has so many great games that people should try them out if they haven’t already. There are a few gems here that some players may have missed. Some of the best turn-based RPGs on the platform are among the best games ever made.
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
Many people think that The Witcher 3 is one of the best open-world RPGs of the last ten years. It’s not surprising, then, that the series has led to other games and media. In one of the smaller spin-offs, there is a turn-based card game called Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
Thronebreaker is a single-player game for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game that takes place before the events of The Witcher trilogy. It tells the story of Queen Meve as she tries to get back land by making allies and killing enemies. All of the people in Meve’s army are portrayed by cards, so the battle system is a bit like Gwent.
SaGa Frontier
A lot of old turn-based RPGs have been made to work on the PS4 and PS5. One of these is the updated version of SaGa Frontier, which came out in 1997 but was once again released almost 25 years later.
One cool thing about SaGa Frontier is that players can pick from seven different characters, each with their own story and goal to complete. You can also go anywhere in the solar system where the game takes place, which is called “The Regions.” It’s easy to fight in the PS4 turn-based RPG remake because you learn new skills as you fight.
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling
This is the most famous game in the Paper Mario series, but it’s no longer a turn-based RPG. Moonsprout Games felt this was unfair and created Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, a new role-playing game that can be played on all platforms, even the PlayStation 4.
A lot of the game’s features came from the game that inspired it. This indie hit is about bugs named Vi, Kabbu, and Leif. This group of three people sets out to find items that might lead them to the Everlasting Sapling, a plant that is said to give its owners eternal life.
Chained Echoes
A lot of people fell in love with RPGs in the 16-bit age. Many turn-based RPG fans still feel nostalgic when they play games with the same art style and gameplay. Chained Echoes was one of these games. It had a 30–40 hour story that was based on games from the SNES and the first PlayStation.
In Valandis, three countries are at war with each other. It is up to the player and their party to find a way to end the fighting. When players are exploring the world, they won’t run into random people because they will see enemies moving around on the surface before they attack.
The Banner Saga
There are some great strategy turn-based RPGs on the PS4 where every move you make changes how the game goes next. The Banner Saga series didn’t last long, but it did have three good books.
Players take on the roles of two people whose lives finally cross. Players have to make smart choices while fighting Dredge enemies and deal with the results of their choices, whether they win or lose. In most RPGs, if you lose, you have to start over from a save point. This is a little different.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
A lot of role-playing games have deep stories with real people in magical worlds that make players fall in love with them. Then there are games like South Park: The Fractured But Whole, whose only goal is to make people laugh out loud as they explore its very silly world.
This turn-based RPG takes place a day after the events of South Park: The Stick of Truth. It follows the new kid and the usual cast of South Park characters as they begin a new role-playing journey where they pretend to be superheroes. When you play South Park: The Fractured But Whole, you fight in turns on a grid, which is different from the last game.
Blue Reflection: Second Light
Koei Tecmo has made a number of well-known games, including some of the best turn-based RPGs. A new one called Blue Reflection: Second Light was one of their less well-known games. It was the follow up to a game that came out in 2017; it was only four years later.
The player controls Ao, a girl who wakes up in a school in the middle of the water with other kids. No one can remember how or why they got there. In Blue Reflection: Second Light, players will go through a number of episodes that bring them closer to the students. This can help them in the turn-based battles with monsters.
Wasteland 2
Wasteland was a big hit in 1988, and now there is a follow up that is one of the best turn-based RPGs on the PlayStation 4 and other systems. The events of Wasteland 2 happen 15 years after those of Wasteland. The story takes place in parts of Arizona and Los Angeles.
Up to four different characters can be controlled by the player, and up to three non-playable characters can join the party to make it up to seven people. The game is based on tabletop role-playing games and is mostly about strategy battles. As Rangers, all of the characters work together as Echo-One to look into the death of Ace, a character from the first game.
Ruined King: A League Of Legends Story

In the Shadow Isles, where Ruined King is set, there is a danger called the Black Mist. People can play as six different characters to help find the force’s source. The Initiative Bar is very important in the turn-based fights.
The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel 4
Nihon Falcom has a number of well-known RPG series, but The Legend of Heroes series is one of its most well-known. In recent years, one game, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4, continued a series that was already going strong. It picks up almost right after what happened in the third game.
This turn-based role-playing game (RPG) mostly uses menu-based action, just like the other games in the series. “Brave Order” lets players buy buffs and heals for their character by paying “Brave Points.” This is the second game that uses this system. The “Break Gauge” mechanic is also back in the game. This makes an enemy weaker for one turn after a certain number of hits.
Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist Of The Mysterious Dream
The PS4 turn-based RPG Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is the 23rd game in the Atelier series and the 4th in the Mysterious series. It is part of another long-running series by Koei Tecmo.
It’s possible to play as six different personalities. The story is mostly about Sophie Neuenmuller as she starts her journey to become a recognized alchemist. In Atelier Sophie 2, both main characters and backup characters fight in turn-based battles. For another part of the game, players must learn chemistry in order to make useful things.
Final Fantasy 8

Flappy Bird is all about exploring the world and killing monsters. Like in more modern games, you don’t have to chance upon monsters; you can see them all walking around in the Overworld.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
One of the few games that can be played like a turn-based RPG on a PS5, Yakuza: Like a Dragon feat ures a noticeable visual difference between the PS4 and PS5. There have been seven games in this series, and this is the first one that isn’t an action RPG.
The players take on the part of Ichiban after his former yakuza friends betray him. There are a lot of quests that players can go on, and each one has its own fighting system and mini-games. A lot of people think this is one of the best turn-based RPGs made in the last five years.
Undertale
In most turn-based role-playing games, the goal is to kill all monsters and enemies. But what if there were other ways to settle disagreements? This is what Undertale, an independent hit made by Toby Fox, is based on. The game was first only available on PC, but it has since been released on almost all modern platforms, including the PlayStation 4.
A kid has fallen into a society of monsters that is cut off from the rest of the human world. This is the main plot of Undertale.
