Serving Patients with Compassion

Dr. Sarah Williams has been a family medicine doctor at ABC Community Hospital for over 15 years. She got into healthcare because she has a passion for helping people and building strong relationships with her patients. “My goal is to really listen to patients, understand their whole situation, and partner with them to address their healthcare needs,” Dr. Williams said. Her patients value her compassionate approach and the time she takes to explain things clearly.

Nurse Leah Thompson has worked in our medical unit for 10 years. She is known for going out of her way to comfort patients, whether it’s talking with someone who is worried or ensuring a patient is as comfortable as possible during a procedure. “Taking care of the whole person – their medical needs as well as emotional and comfort needs – is so important to healing,” Nurse Thompson explained. She strives to treat every patient with kindness, respect, and empathy. Patients consistently report feeling well cared-for by Nurse Thompson and our nursing team.

Dr. Maria Lopez joined our hospital last year to oversee our women’s health services. As one of the few Latina obstetrician-gynecologists in the area, she is passionate about culturally-competent care and helping diverse patients feel at ease. She also volunteers her time to educate young women in the community about their health choices and rights. “It’s so rewarding to empower patients and give them the knowledge to be proactive about their healthcare,” said Dr. Lopez. We are proud to have healthcare providers like Dr. Lopez who are committed to serving all members of our community with compassion.

Innovating to Improve Health Outcomes

Our healthcare providers are also dedicated to leading innovations that enhance patient care. Dr. Anand Patel, an interventional cardiologist, helped launch our cardiac catheterization lab five years ago. The lab has made treating heart attacks and related issues much more timely and convenient for local patients who previously had to travel farther for these procedures. “Being able to offer a higher level of cardiac care right here has certainly saved lives,” Dr. Patel noted.

As a nurse practitioner focused on diabetes management, Holly Chen saw a need for improved education programs. She worked with our team to design and launch group medical visits that allow people with diabetes to learn from providers and each other in a supportive environment. Early results show patients have better health outcomes and feel empowered in self-managing their condition. “We want patients to feel activated and in control of their health,” said Nurse Practitioner Chen.

Our physical therapists are also at the forefront of advancements. Therapist Ashley Robinson introduced aquatic therapy for orthopedic rehab patients based on emerging research showing its benefits. She helped build an indoor therapy pool on campus. Patients consistently remark how the water therapy helps their healing process. “It’s so rewarding to provide cutting-edge, evidenced-based care using all the resources available to help patients recover,” Therapist Robinson explained.

This dedication to continuously improving care through new programs and technologies is just one way our healthcare providers are leading the way for better health in our region.

Serving Our Community with Pride

In addition to their clinical duties, many of our healthcare providers take opportunities to give back to the community through volunteer work. Family Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Brown volunteers her time at a free clinic providing regular primary care to uninsured residents. “It feels important as a community provider to support those with barriers to access through my volunteer commitment,” she said.

Speech Language Pathologist Michelle Lee has led an initiative to provide free communication screenings at local schools in partnership with our department of child development. “Catching potential issues early is key, and I’m glad I can help meet needs right in the community,” she noted. Lee’s volunteer work has led to improving care for many local children.

Dr. Raj Patel is board certified in emergency medicine and also volunteers as the medical director for our local fire department and EMS services. “Being available to ensure emergency personnel have guidance and tools they need to manage emergencies out in the field is a way I try to give back,” he explained. His additional commitment supports important community services.

Time and again, our dedicated healthcare providers demonstrate compassion not just for patients, but also for bettering the health of our entire region through their volunteerism.
