Without a good story, what’s the point of an RPG?
There are a lot of different subgenres and long-running titles in the RPG genre that you can fall in love with. Many people think that the story is the most important part of any role-playing game (RPG). The best RPGs often have great stories that players can get lost in and fall in love with.
This isn’t possible in every RPG, but the ones that can have some of the best stories ever in the genre. For your enjoyment, here are some of the best RPG games with great story lines.
Planescape: Torment
Planescape: Torment came out in 1999, but it’s still suggested because it’s so enjoyable in almost every way. This includes the story of it. You are the scary killer known as the Nameless One, who lives in the city of Sigil and has lost his memory. Until Morte, a floating skull, leads you out of there and into other places you don’t know about.
Sigil is home to many different species, and some of them will join you on your quest to find your lost memories. The story of the game keeps you interested and wanting to keep going all the way through, and the interesting people make the story even better.
Persona 3
The story is very important in all of the Persona games, but Persona 3 stands out. The story isn’t slowed down by inappropriate humor like Persona 4’s is, and the way it moves makes you want more of it instead of less, unlike Persona 5.
In this game, you play the part of a new student who quickly realizes their true identity. He is put in charge of a group whose job it is to get rid of Shadows and the mysterious Dark Hour. The strange sickness called Apathy Syndrome seems to be caused by shadows. Persona 3 does a great job with its themes of life and death, and it’s better than the others because it’s not all about the main character. Other people talk to each other without him there, which makes for interesting relationships and dynamics.
Kingdom Hearts
People often say that the Kingdom Hearts games are hard to understand, but the truth is that their stories are just complicated, and they live on hidden meanings and symbols. In the first game, you play as Sora, a boy whose island goes dark quickly. Now that he knows how to use the Keyblade, the fates of all the worlds are in his hands.
Almost every game has new characters and story points that are linked to the ones that came before. If you’re not used to following such a long-running story, it can be overwhelming, but once you get on board, there’s nothing else like it. It becomes clear that people who look like they know everything don’t. They also lie about the information they do have. Also, you spend so much time with Sora that you can’t help but feel what he feels during his trip.
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
Star Wars is in almost all kinds of media. Because of this, the series has had a lot of stories. Even so, Knights of the Old Republic still stands out. This is because it tells a more interesting story than the usual one about good versus evil.
You play as a person who has lost their memory and helps find the bad guy Darth Malak. While on the way, this hero slowly remembers things while also making moral decisions and finding friends. The last point is the most important because the choices you make and how you feel about right and wrong have a big effect on who you are and how the story goes.
Assassin’s Creed Origins
In the past, every Assassin’s Creed game was an action-adventure game with some RPG features. Assassin’s Creed Origins, on the other hand, changed everything because it was a true role-playing game. It also had a major story that was very emotional.
It’s about a Medjay named Bayek Of Siwa whose main goal is to find and kill everyone in the group that killed his son to get revenge. His mission takes him all over Ancient Egypt, where he meets some well-known people from that time.
Nier: Automata
A lot of wars between people and robots take place in games, movies, and TV shows. But it’s not often that you see a whole story about machines fighting machines. But that’s what you get in Nier: Automata an attacking mechanical force, automata fights androids made by humans.
But that’s only the main idea behind a very complicated and thought-provoking story. It’s actually designed so that after one run, you won’t really know what’s going on. You should go through it more than once to make sure you see and understand everything.
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Shin Megami Tensei 4 was a game that many people first played in the series that has been making some of the best JRPGs ever. The main story of this game is about angels and devils going to war.
At first glance, that sounds like a typical story about good bad. But the game crosses the lines between what is holy and what is sin in a way that makes both sides look just as bad as they are right in some ways. In contrast to many games, which have easy “Hero” or “Villain” paths in their choice-based story telling, this makes the final choice in the game tough.
Mass Effect 2
The Mass Effect series is one of the most famous in video game history, but many would say that the second game is the best. After all, the game has a great group of characters, each with their own personality and story that is very different from the others.
The main story is also very moving. Captain Shepard, who is famous for being brave, has to join the questionable Cerberus group to stop a mystery race called The Collectors. All of this builds up to a final task that is still talked about as the best ending ever.
Many of the characters’ lives will change because of what you do, and the story will go in new ways. This makes the adventure you’re on even bigger and more exciting. It’s still good to this day.
Fallout: New Vegas
The Fallout series gets great reviews, but Fallout: New Vegas is the best of the bunch, mostly because of its amazing setting. There are a lot of important choices in the story that can completely change the direction of the story at every turn. New Vegas is a great central location for the game. So, what begins as a typical payback story quickly becomes more complicated. And the main character meets a lot of different groups and decides what will happen to the wasteland.
This story has more than one possible ending, and the number and quality of side quests can make you spend more time on them than on the main story. This isn’t a bad thing, though. You can choose how to play New Vegas. There is no good or bad. You, the player, decide what to do in this world after the end of the world.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics is a cult classic for a reason: it has one of the best stories in the series, taking you deep into a world where politics are unstable and chaos reigns. You are thrust into a war between two kingdoms as you take control of a mercenary whose acts on the battlefield make him deeply involved in the conflict.
It’s great that the combat is great on its own, but when you add in the emotional story and the great people you’ll meet and interact with, every battle becomes a dangerous one. During a playthrough, it leads to some really sad times.
Undertale
Today, it almost seems like a waste of time to praise Undertale‘s story. This game went viral when it came out in 2015, and it’s clearly both fun and interesting. Things that start out looking like they will be more innocent quickly turn into something scary and sad. A story that makes you think about how you treat people who are on the outside and in need.
It almost seems silly to get that invested in a game with a pixelated skeleton that makes bone puns, but Undertale is a modern RPG favorite for all ages because it has the right amount of humor and sadness.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
There is no doubt that The Witcher 3 is the best game in the series. With all of its DLC, it gives you more than 150 hours of fun gameplay packed full of interesting storylines and sidequests. The main plot is about Geralt and his friends trying to find Ciri, his adopted daughter, who is being sought by a mystery group known as “The Wild Hunt.”
As a monster hunter, Geralt makes for a great main character, and his job leads to some great fights and set pieces. There is something interesting going on in every part of the map, and if you take the time, you can find a lot of story in every place. It also gives you a lot of options, but only a few of them really change how the story goes.
Final Fantasy 7
A lot of people think that Final Fantasy 7 is the best RPG ever. Most likely, it will make you cry more than once. It has one of the best stories ever. There’s also a shocking turn of events that really raises the stakes. All of this takes place in the amazing world of Gaia, a planet that is said to be alive in the game’s story.
Cloud is one of the best main characters in any video game, and his minor characters aren’t bad either. The journey that Cloud and his friends take against Sephiroth, who is a wonderfully fleshed-out bad guy, is both emotional and physical. Even though the remake is great, the original Final Fantasy 7 is still the best.
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger is a great game that has held up very well over time. The story that changes the course of time is a big part of this. Crono is a great main character, even though he doesn’t say a word the whole time. His friends, like Frog (a real frog) and Princess Marle, are good people who are also very well written.
To stop the end of the world, you’ll have to go through different places and times. It also has more than one finish. Each one is set off by choices you made during the game.
Disco Elysium
When it comes to disco, Elysium stands tall with some of the greats. It gives you a huge number of options for how to move through the story. You play as a detective who has to figure out who did it. The game takes place in a world that is still rebuilt after a big war many years ago.
In Disco Elysium, there are no fights. In its place, you’ll have to deal with tricky verbal sparring and learn how to use an interesting skill system that can change the story in very different ways based on how you use it. The writing is very clever, and Happy Wheels is great for playing again and again because it’s so open-ended and has so much to see.
Dragon Age: Origins
This is the best game in the series, and it also has the best story. The story and the people in it are both beautifully told. You will be discovering a very big world, Ferelden. It’s both big in size and wide.
The Darkspawn are a strong enemy that is trying to take over the world above. You play as a new member of the Grey Wardens, a group whose job it is to stop this evil force. Every game in the series before Origins hasn’t been as good as this one, especially the writing, which is some of BioWare’s best work. It fits right in with the fantasy world of the game.
